The Polish Agency for Enterprise Development is rolling out the next tranche of funding designed to stimulate innovation among domestic companies, offering multi-million-PLN support for the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. This initiative aims to help the Polish economy bridge the technological gap with European leaders and shift the perception of R&D - from a costly risk to a profitable and highly secure investment. Entrepreneurs have until the end of the year to prepare and submit their proposals via the electronic system.
The End of Rigid Bureaucracy: Time for Dialogue The latest edition of the program introduces a fundamental shift in agency-business relations, focusing on open communication. Replacing the traditional, one-sided document verification, a two-stage model has been introduced, granting applicants the opportunity to personally defend their concepts before a panel of experts. This allows for the clarification of business assumptions and the amendment of applications upon the evaluation committee's request. Consequently, this significantly boosts the chances of securing capital for entities with outstanding concepts that might have previously been rejected on purely formal grounds. Furthermore, the evaluation criteria have been streamlined, focusing strictly on the actual research and commercialization value.
Holistic Funding for the Innovation Lifecycle The available funds promote a comprehensive approach to bringing new solutions to the market. Financial support is not limited solely to testing or engineering work - it allows for the financing of a broad spectrum of activities necessary for full commercialization. This means companies can cover costs related to patenting and defending intellectual property, training staff to operate new technologies, and even executing activities aimed at international expansion. From an operational perspective, the grant also covers the salaries of the R&D team, essential equipment, licenses, and advisory services.
Requirements and Strategic Alignment of Projects This instrument is designed with ambitious, scalable projects in mind, evidenced by the high minimum expenditure threshold, reaching several million PLN for R&D activities alone. The upper limit of support, in turn, is a staggering 50 million PLN per single venture.
To secure funding, enterprises must demonstrate that their pioneering solutions will not only stand out in the domestic market but also align with the state's broader economic strategy. Projects must comply with national guidelines addressing challenges in key sectors such as digitalization, modern medicine, industrial automation, and the energy transition. Depending on the nature of the planned work and the size of the enterprise itself, public funds can cover anywhere from 25 to as much as 80 percent of the planned budget.
For companies planning advanced technological development, the coming weeks represent the optimal time to review their R&D strategies and begin preparations for the autumn call for proposals.
